Director of Communications, SOSV

ABOUT SOSV

SOSV is one of the largest early-stage VC investors in the world, focused on deep tech investments in climate and human health. We launch more than 100+ startups each year through our industry-leading startup development programs: HAX (hard tech) and IndieBio (life sciences), based in San Francisco, New York City, Newark, and Shenzhen. Our fundamental mission is to build companies delivering radical innovations in “human and planetary health,” categories where SOSV is widely recognized as a leading investor. SOSV is among few venture firms that have such a variety of interesting founders: one-third of whom are female, and all told represent 86 nationalities across 56 countries.

WHO YOU ARE

You are a hands-on communications pro who knows a story when you see it, loves seizing on fast-moving press opportunities, and excels at getting journalists excited about compelling ideas. You’re all about keeping up with the news around our big topic areas—namely climate and human health—and connecting the big picture back to SOSV to find opportunities to make our experience and voice heard. You love working with founders building tech that matters. You are a fast learner, undaunted by the challenging scientific and technical focuses of SOSV’s deep tech companies. (Don’t worry; we all spend a lot of time online educating ourselves.) And you can help distill these complex topics into fascinating stories that resonate with journalists, brands, and consumers alike.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. 5+ years experience working in communications at an agency or VC/tech firm
  2. Well-versed in building relationships with climate, health, tech, and finance journalists
  3. Excellent at finding and creating opportunities for media outreach, mapping back to priority themes and sectors for the firm and its portfolio
  4. Able to educate key stakeholders like portfolio company founders on media and comms best practices
  5. Confident as a writer, whether that’s a pitch, a post for the SOSV website, a press release, or marketing copy for an event
  6. Adept at creating social media content (namely, LinkedIn), and able to tailor content to suit various voices/audiences
  7. Tireless communicator, able to effectively coordinate messaging with a globally distributed set of stakeholders
  8. Highly organized and able to keep track of a variety of projects and portfolio companies (we have several hundred!) at any given time
  9. Data-driven and adept at spotting trends and patterns to inform our go-forward strategy (We have a proprietary media scoring system that we run monthly and an annual brand survey to help analyze how we’re doing in the press relative to our business/comms priorities.)

WHAT YOU’LL DO

The Director of Communication will work on projects related to SOSV itself, including the firm’s general partners and our HAX and IndieBio programs, as well as the top companies in SOSV’s extensive portfolio. The former work will involve press interviews and event appearances for the general partners, while the latter will include in-depth work with founders in our portfolio to hone their pitches (typically funding news) to media like TechCrunch, Bloomberg, and others. The director will also help produce occasional press releases as well as posts for the SOSV website.

You’ll also work closely with SOSV senior operating partner Ned Desmond and SOSV partner Ben Joffe on major productions such as the Human Health 100 and Climate Tech 100 (lists of our top companies in those categories), as well as the SOSV Climate Tech summit, a world-class event attended by thousands in October each year.

The role reports to Ned Desmond, Senior Operating Partner at SOSV (former TechCrunch COO).

Individuals seeking employment at SOSV are considered without regards to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, marital status, ancestry, physical or mental disability, veteran status, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
