Job Responsibilities Overview: The South Carolina State Museum Education team is searching for this year's group of amazing educators! Educators on our team should be enthusiastic, dependable, and creative. Individuals must be quick learners, self-starters, and be able to handle a fast-paced and always changing environment. Successful candidates will be valued and fully contributing members of the Audience Engagement Team, responsible for a variety of educational activities in several subject areas with a heavy focus on STEAM education. Education content ranges in grade level from Pre-K through High School.
- This is a part-time position: This position requires mostly morning hours Tues-Fri from 8am-3pm along with availability on many Mondays, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Hours are flexible, but a minimum of 2 regular weekdays is mandatory (Tues-Fri), with a preference of 3 or more. This position is limited to 29.5hrs per week, with an average of 20hrs in the fall and 25hrs in the spring.
- A commitment through the 2024-25 school year is required (May 30, 2025) with the possibility of being extended an offer as a summer camp educator.
- The salary is $12.50-13.50/hr depending on experience and availability.
- This is an on-site job at the SC State Museum in Columbia, SC. There is no virtual option.
Reports to: Manager of Education and Interpretation
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Developing, writing, and teaching educational and standards-based activities (both hands-on and auditorium style) focusing on STEAM initiatives. Candidate will also be asked to learn history, art, and natural history fields in order to assist with teaching those classes as well. There is an extremely heavy emphasis on science and exciting, large-group presentations.
- Must be able to follow safety regulations in a laboratory setting.
- Will need to assist with materials management and organization.
- Must be willing to drive long distances and go on outreach presentations throughout the state.
- Will need to present both live and pre-recorded planetarium shows and educational programs to museum guests of all ages in a theater setting. May also be trained and responsible for running 4D shows, the observatory, and assisting with Group Visits and Front Desk duties as required.
- Responsible for the safety and well-being of both small and large groups of students.
- Other development opportunities include projects such as camps, scout clinics, pre- and post- visit educational materials, exhibition exploration materials, public programs, and more! Development may include but not be limited to writing the activities, ordering and organizing supplies, and recording instructional videos.
- Educators also assist with things like guided tours, education stations, and pop-up exhibitions. Some of these activities are for evening or adult events.
- The Audience Engagement Team is responsible for many of our accessibility efforts, including an Accessibility Morning the 2nd Saturday of every month. Members of our team must have a passion for serving all children and families and be comfortable with individuals who may be disabled or have special needs.
- Must be available to work Monday-Friday, April 14-18 for Spring Break Camp.
Minimum and Additional Requirements Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Must have knowledge of, or be willing to learn, about STEAM related fields and history education.
- Knowledge of inquiry-rich, constructivist-based educational pedagogies with a strong focus on child-led learning.
- Must be able to organize time effectively and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Highly organized both with physical materials and with virtual content and computer files.
- Must be comfortable using technology and a variety of software suites with a strong focus on Office 365 and Microsoft suites.
ADA:
- Must be comfortable working in low light level environments
- Must be able to regularly lift upwards of 50lbs.
- Requires long periods of standing and walking around, including climbing several flights of stairs multiple times a day
- Requires working in a variety of environments including indoor office spaces and outdoor locations that may be very hot or very cold.
