Recruitment Range: $22.83-$26.54 hourly dependent on knowledge and experience

Minimum Preparation for Work:
  • Graduation from an accredited college, university, trade, or technical school with an associate's degree in civil engineering or related field; and
  • Two (2) years experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) involving civil engineering-related projects; and
  • Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as required by the department where the position is housed;
Or

  • Combination of education, training, and/or work experience equal to or higher than the requirements listed above as determined by Human Resources.
Necessary Special Requirements:
  • Possession of an appropriate driver license for equipment operated and any license, training or certification required by law or regulation to complete assigned tasks.
Nature of Work:
This is responsible technical work in civil engineering and the construction, operation, and maintenance of City projects.
An employee in this position performs office and fieldwork in the investigation, development, and design of assigned projects. Work performance is evaluated based on observed and attained results.

Examples of Work:
  • Assists with the investigation and design of engineering projects.
  • Participates in engineering studies, investigations, and surveys relating to construction projects.
  • Prepares construction cost estimates, reviews legal descriptions, and drafts preliminary utility designs.
  • Processes county, state, EPA and CORPS permitting paperwork for construction projects.
  • Reviews work orders and helps ensure projects are completed as specified, within established timeframes, and in accordance with approved project plans.
  • Maintains and manipulates project and/or departmental databases as needed to track projects, inventory, and other resources or components of assigned projects.
  • Assists project managers as needed in the coordination of projects to include assisting with resolution planning for project complications.
  • Utilizes GIS systems as needed to create, edit, and maintain features and geometric networks.
  • Interpret legal descriptions/instruments, survey bearings, and technical plans/drawings to determine boundaries, assets, and facilities for georeferencing.
  • Provides reports and maps to field personnel, department heads, and regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinates information with city, county, state, other agencies, consultants, and contractors.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of basic practices and principals as applied to civil engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of civil engineering terms and standards associated with reading and interpreting construction and project plans.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices used in property locations and topographic surveys.
  • Knowledge of construction equipment and materials used in civil engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS, AGOL, ArcPro mapping systems.
  • Knowledge of the Federal, State, City, and professional regulations governing City projects related to the department where the employee is assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relation?ship with associates and the general public.
  • Ability to make arithmetic computations required in the field and office engineering work.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and instructions.
  • Ability to manipulate and maintain databases in order to capture, analyze, and manage data.

Work Environment:
An employee in this job is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
