The Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS) Department made a strong impact at this year’s Wisconsin Health and Physical Education (WHPE) Conference.
Professors Tony Pustina and Shelly Johnston, alongside students Ethan Ivan ’26, Idarius Walton ’26, Kenneth Busch ’26, and Ryan Holleman ’25, delivered a dynamic session: “Revolutionizing the Way We Teach Sportsmanship, Create Community, and Develop Responsibility Through the World of Trending Sports.”
This session wasn’t just about playing games — it was about leveraging trending sports and activities to teach essential life skills such as sportsmanship, community building, and personal responsibility. If you’re looking for ways to energize your curriculum while fostering these critical competencies, this hands-on session provided innovative strategies to empower students to take ownership of their behavior through engaging games.
Each student presenter introduced a unique trending game, linking it to physical education standards that align with physical literacy and meaningful movement. The creative approaches and active participation from attendees made the session a hit, with both teachers and college students enjoying the interactive experience.
Prof. Johnston expressed pride in her students: “I was so proud of their professional interactions while presenting to a standing-room-only session. Great job, guys!”
The EXSS team extends their gratitude to their peers Braydon Barth ’26, Alicia Lloveras ’26, and Angelina Michna ’26 for attending practice sessions and contributing ideas. Special thanks goes to Professor Sireno for providing practice sessions at Union Grove High School, as well as Prof. Johnston’s Adapted Physical Education class for offering valuable feedback through lessons with KUSD’s “Step Program.”
This conference provided an invaluable opportunity for Carthage EXSS students to build professional connections with educators across the state, underscoring the importance of collaboration and continued learning in the field of physical education, health, and adapted physical education.
Prof. Pustina closed the conference with his insightful presentation, “Bridging the Gap: Training Theory for High School Students and Athletes.” His discussion focused on the practical application of training theories in developing weight training programs for students and athletes. Attendees left with a wealth of resources to enhance their physical education and athletic programs.
Prof. Pustina’s ongoing research and programming in the soccer field were also highlighted, with an open invitation for EXSS students — and students of all majors — interested in research opportunities. To learn more or get involved, contact Prof. Pusina directly.
It was a delight to see Carthage alumni attending and engaging with the EXSS team’s session, further enriching the experience and reinforcing the value of lifelong professional networks.
The 2024 WHPE Conference was a powerful reminder of the impact of collaboration, creativity, and commitment to growth in physical education — and the EXSS Department was proud to be at the forefront of it all.
