Job Summary : Under the direction of the park superintendent, the landscaper manager is responsible for the creation, modification, and upkeep of the softscapes around every city owned building, city park, and right of way.

Essential Job Functions

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential duties:

  1. Develop and implement comprehensive landscape management plans for all city-owned properties, including irrigation and other landscape features.
  2. Carry out the above plans by planting, pruning, weeding, and watering plants. This will also include mowing, fertilizing, aerating, and dethatching lawns as well as installing and maintaining patios, fences, retaining walls, etc.
  3. Manage budgets for equipment, materials, and supplies.
  4. Identify and implement sustainable landscaping practices
  5. Oversee the selection, purchase, and planting of trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  6. Manage and implement
  7. Maintain accurate records of all landscaping activities.
  8. Take ownership of all aspects of water management in the landscape
  9. Identify and diagnose diseases affecting turf and ornamental plants
  10. Confirm work is performed according to established safety and quality standards
  11. Use sound judgment regarding public and worker safety at all time but especially when work is being performed in high traffic areas and around other utilities
  12. Retrieve and input data from/into computerized systems
  13. Assist other city departments when needed.
  14. Coordinate with city staff and volunteer work force to complete larger tasks or tasks geared specifically for volunteers.
  15. Perform related tasks as required

Knowledge

  • Safe working procedures and practices.
  • City codes and regulations governing right of way maintenance.
  • Excavation standards in applying such standards to the work performed.
  • Supervisory practices to oversee jobsites and crews.
  • Machinery, tools, and equipment used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of any pertinent areas of potential landscaping
  • Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.

Skills

  • Assessing plant health to mitigate the spread of disease and to encourage proper growth
  • Handle stress effectively without it interfering with performance.
  • Organize, set priorities, and exercise sound independent judgment within areas of responsibility.
  • Operate a computer, using word processing, spreadsheet, database software, and other standard office equipment.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.

Abilities

  • Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships with elected officials, city manager, department heads, other employees, and the general public.
  • Identify and respond to community issues, concerns, and needs.
  • Retrieve/input data from/into computerized systems.
  • Perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and implement recommendations.
  • Supervise a crew and to assume responsibility for the work product as well as equipment and materials used
  • Effective use of a variety of inputs to create a desired landscaping product
  • Make decisions and assume responsibility for work product.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State, and Local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
