Principal Materials Engineer - Additive Manufacturing ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE BUSINESS: Leslie Controls, Inc
LOCATION: Tampa, FL
DIRECT REPORTING: VP/GM Tampa
POSITION DETAILS The Principal Materials Engineer - Additive Manufacturing position use a variety of techniques to build models layer by layer, including laser-based and advanced printing techniques. They are responsible for designing and developing 3D printing processes, and for selecting the appropriate materials for printing.
Principal Activities - Conduct process, product, and applications development for additive manufacturing (AM) processing.
- Managing projects and continuous improvement efforts utilizing the Operating Model.
- Deliver on both internal development projects as well as external, customer-driven projects in additive manufacturing.
- Interaction and engagement with multiple areas within the company (R&D, Production, Commercial, manufacturing) as well as with customers in relation to AM powder management.
- Support Design for AM (DfAM) consultation and utilize 3D modeling to optimize geometries for manufacturability.
- Incorporate geometric compensation, support structure, machine stock, GD&T, and powder removal required to produce products effectively at scale.
- Optimize print process techniques (including designing and running Design of Experiments (DOEs) for novel and conventional alloys, and also to reduce build time while ensuring product quality and consistency.
- Establish and iterate on engineering planning and controls in order to produce consistent and repeatable product from print start through customer delivery.
- Support root-cause analysis techniques to troubleshoot printability issues.
- Own additive process qualification efforts specific to product as they mature.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Job Requirements:
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS Knowledge Skills & Abilities - Strong background in the interpretation of engineering drawings, specifications and manufacturing processes.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and leadership skills, with the ability to prioritize and focus in a dynamic team-oriented environment and be able to influence others and lead small teams.
- Familiarity with metal powder production and with additive process and/or product development.
- Ability to lead initiatives of moderate scope and impact.
- Ability to coordinate several projects simultaneously.
- Ideal candidate will be detail oriented, passionate about additive and related technologies and able to effectively use problem identification and solution skills.
- Proven analytical and organizational ability, strong problem-solving skills and a creative, outside-the-box thinker. Demonstrated ability to overcome obstacles
- Hands on skills with SEM, EDS, EBSD, IGF, pycnometer, PSD measurements, XRF, ICP, and OES
Education & Experience - Bachelor's degree in materials, chemical, mechanical engineering or other relevant field
- 5+ years of relevant experience with Additive Manufacturing
- Experience with stainless steel and copper nickel within Additive Manufacturing
Others - Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense issued Confidential Security Clearance or possessed a Security Clearance within the past 24 months.
