Job Description

Senior Electronics Engineering Associate

The Engineering Division of Berkeley Lab is seeking Senior Electronics Engineering Associate to independently oversee technical and construction support for the ALS-U. Responsibilities include documentation, procurement, installation instructions, oversight of ALS-U electronic and electrical systems testing, and coordinating with subsystem leads to ensure NEC-compliant cabling and AC distribution hardware design.

The ALS ( ) is a world-class accelerator-based user facility that provides high intensity high energy photon beams for science. A 200-meter circumference electron accelerator generates photon packets that feed the more than 40 independent beamlines where more than 2000 scientists per year perform their experiments. The ALS has recently started a major accelerator upgrade project to rejuvenate the facility for many years to come.

What You Will Do:

  • Collaborate on specifying electrical infrastructure, including AC loads and delivery methods to racks and components, and control cabling/wireway methods, adhering to NEC and LBNL standards.
  • Specify, research, and procure electrical and electronics equipment, ensuring compliance with NEC, NRTL, and seismic regulations.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for accelerator electrical and electronic systems, including design proposals, specifications, installation instructions, and schematics for ALS-U, following ALS-U, LBNL, and industry standards, using approved CAD tools and procedures.
  • Create and update electrical drawings per ALS-U/ALS guidelines in Windchill.
  • Develop installation and work instructions based on design/subsystem input.
  • Provide guidance to electricians/EM/EI during installation and supervise under managerial direction.
  • Coordinate, specify, and procure hardware for ALS and ALS-U projects, applying judgment within defined procedures, reviewing design prints, establishing inspection criteria, and selecting materials conforming to LBNL's UL listing requirements.
  • Offer technical input applying standard principles, theories, and concepts in new method and concept development.
  • Maintain communication with project personnel, including logbooks and online document repositories, and contribute to meetings.
  • Supervise exempt and non-exempt personnel activities in project coordination.

Additional Responsibilities as Needed:

  • Support ALS and non- ALS projects at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

What is Required:

Senior Electronics Engineering Associate (Level 2):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in functional specialty closely aligned with relevant programs and extensive related professional technical experience preferred or related professional technical experience.
  • Solid foundation in CAD design techniques, design rules and specifications; AutoCAD or OrCAD experience.
  • Proficient in executing and managing technical projects from start to finish using project management principles.
  • Strong electronics circuit and system design, testing, and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Effective communicator adept at collaborating with scientists and engineers to define and achieve goals.
  • Skilled in MS Word, Excel, Project, Google Workspace, and Zoom.
  • Exceptional organizational and record-keeping capabilities.
  • Knowledgeable in electrical safety principles, NFPA-70, NFPA-70E, and the National Electric Code.

Principal Electronics Engineering Associate (Level 3), in addition to Level 2:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in functional specialty closely aligned with relevant program and minimum of 6-8 years related professional technical experience.
  • Experience with accelerator and beamline electronic systems, or equivalent industrial experience. Solid foundation in CAD design techniques, design rules and specifications; AutoCAD or OrCAD experience.
  • Advanced background in electronics circuit and system design, testing, and troubleshooting abilities.

Desired Qualifications:

  • AA degree in Electronics Engineering Technology or related field, with 5 years equivalent experience; knowledge equivalent to BS degree.
  • Experience with accelerator and beamline electronic systems, or equivalent industrial experience.
  • Experience with the installation and/or operation of the following types of systems:
    • Electrical power distribution.
    • Low conductivity and cooled water monitoring systems.
    • Database management tools.
    • Application of advanced sophisticated technological skills, scientific principles and mathematics.
    • Electronic equipment and electronics enclosures.
    • Large electro and/or permanent magnets.
    • High current and/or high voltage DC power supplies.
    • Working knowledge of various Industrial Controls Systems (e.g., PLC, SCADA, DCS).
    • Personnel safety and equipment interlocks.
    • Knowledge of networking hardware and protocols.
  • Relevant technical certification.

Level 2

The expected pay for this position is $108,780.00 to $132,960.00 annually, which fits into the full salary range of $96,684.00 to $163,188.0 annually for this position. Final salary amounts depend upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

Level 3

The expected pay for this position is $131,808.00 to $161,112.00 annually, which fits into the full salary range of $117,180.00 to $197,748.00 annually for this position. Final salary amounts depend upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

  • This is a full-time 2-year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
